Welcome to 8th grade Language Arts. This year you will WRITE: journal entries; poems; informative, persuasive and narrative essays; a research paper and an outline for a speech. This year you will READ: short stories, poems, non-fiction, plays, and novels. You will be required to read independently all year. You must read books (a combination of novels, non-fiction, biographies, short stories, plays) all year. You will be assessed each marking period on your reading progress by completing a Book Review for each book you read. You will also be responsible for a required number of points from Accelerated Reader quizzes you take for each AR book you read. BONUS: The more you read--the better you read and write!! You will also improve your vocabulary and background knowledge. READING MAKES YOU SMARTER!
