College Option


When looking at colleges, think of the following search criteria:

  1. Type of School
  2. Environment
  3. Geographic Location
  4. Size
  5. Cost
  6. Majors

Follow These Steps

  1. Using the career center and on-line resources, identify schools that meet your criteria and list those you may be intereseted in attending
  2. Locate these schools and check the following:
    • School contact information(address/telephone/fax/website/email)
    • Freshman Class Profile
    • Your credentials compared with the credentials that they require for admission

    Most Competitive Student Rank top 10-20%
    Grade Point Average A to B+
    SAT I scores 1310-1600 / ACT 27-28
    Highly Competitive Student Rank top 20-35%
    Grade Point Average B+ to B
    SAT I scores 1240-1310 / ACT 27-28
    Very Competitive Student Rank top 35-50%
    Grade Point Average no less than B-
    SAT I scores 1150-1240 / ACT 24-26
    Highly Competitive Student Rank top 50-65%
    Grade Point Average B- with a minimum of C+ or C
    SAT I scores 1120 or more / ACT 24 or more
    Less Competitive Student Rank top 65-85%
    Grade Point Average minimum of 2.0
    SAT I scores below 1000 / ACT below 21

  3. Narrow your list to 6-8 schools:
    • 1 reach school
    • 3-5 mainstream schools (where yoe are a good fit)
    • 1 safety school (where you are a sure bet)
  4. Research your list of schools for remaining information:
    • Attend college conferences at Great Valley High School
    • Schedule college visits (preferably when students are there)
    • Talk to previous Great Valley graduates
  5. Follow your Junior/Senior timeline
  6. Fill out an application
