Woodwind family

The Woodwind family of instruments all share certain characteristics. They are:
  • Made of metal (with the exception of traditional instruments)
  • Include a mouthpiece
  • Sound is created using air vibrations
  • Include holes and/or valves
  • Most use small pieces of bamboo called reeds (with the exception of the flute)
Common woodwind instruments include flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone,and bassoon.  Other woodwind instruments can be found in cultures all over the world.
